Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
