Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
