Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
